The chipping yips are a golfer’s worst nightmare.
Are you suffering from the chipping yips? Don’t worry, you are not the only one. A lot of pro golfers have suffered the consequences of having the chipping yips. Check out the video below which discusses what causes the yips and what you can do to fix them. It’s sad how easily we can all be affected!
The chipping yips are a player’s worst nightmare. It’s been shown and proven that those suffering from the yips, on average, add 5.5 shots to their golf game. 5.5 shots!!
The physical reactions of having the chipping yips include freezing, twitching, jerks and tremors. All of which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. These last two elements will add to your mental distress, along with self-consciousness and anxiety. The chipping yips have a tendency to stick with a golfer for a long period of time and many pro golfers have quit the game because of it!
But what I know is that the golfer starts to focus on what is causing the chipping yips. They become so involved in trying to deduce what started the yips that their entire golf game starts to have a negative effect. The conditions that result from having the yips are involuntary. Even if you attempt to control them, you just can’t. Not to mention what is remaining of your game!
So what can you do?
First you must understand that the chipping yips when playing golf, or more correctly the ‘yips’, affect other players in different sports and professions. Many musicians, dart players, cricket players, dentists, and typists have all suffered from the yips.
Many players however, do get cured from their afflictions. With little signs for yips, they enjoy the game again.
How is this being achieved?
A few medical researchers maintain that chipping yips in golfers are caused by an underlying emotional factor. Many doctors have been using a process that is very similar to acupuncture which has been giving great results. Tests were run on some golfers who had the chipping yips on about 70% of their shots. After treatment, it is common for the rate to decrease dramatically. The golfers concerned had reported not feeling any type of jerking or freezing sensations in their arms or hands.
What this means for you as a player is that if you are suffering from the chipping yips. Have you become so stressed out over your chipping yips, that this is causing you to dislike playing golf? Worrying obssessvely over the yips has been proven to make things worse, not better.
A great thing to do would be to practice your shots outside of a game. After taking off the pressure, you can easily concentrate on perfecting your chip shots and short game.
Maybe, you have just been taking the game of golf too seriously. Take a breather and remember why you started playing this game in the first place. Relax and start enjoying golf once again.
If you are concerned about your chipping yips, a trip to the doctor might be in order; to diminish any possibility of a nerve or joint disorder. Once you have the all clear, go out and have fun without having to worry about points.
