Niners Nip Broncos As Orton Struggles In Denver Debut

September 30, 2010

Comments Off

Kyle Orton’s debut as the Denver Broncos starting QB didn’t go quite as planned. Orton, who was acquired from Chicago in the off-season, threw interceptions on each of his first three offensive series. San Francisco’s offense did just enough to eke out a 17-16 NFL preseason victory before their home fans.

The good news for Orton is that despite his three interceptions and a solid backup performance by Chris Simms. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has been steadfast in his support. Orton appeared thankful of this fact in his postgame comments:

“That’s great. That’s certainly what you need in this league is the support of your coach. I’m not worried about it. I’ve got a lot of confidence in myself. I think my team has a lot of confidence in me. … I don’t want to make those decisions and throw three interceptions.”

Its been a rough start to Ortons tenure in Denver”he was even booed during a public scrimmage after throwing an interception.

McDaniels put the fact that it was only the first preseason game into perspective:

“I feel very confident in where we’re at. There’s no reason to start tailspinning into this and that when we’ve only had one preseason game.”

Niners’ cornerback Nate Clemens in particular was a huge factor, hauling in one of Ortons three miscues. After the game he commented on the play:

“I saw the route and played my responsibility and he threw it. I like seeing all of our defensive backs get interceptions and just making plays because we’re game breakers.”

The Niners have yet to name a starting quarterback with both Shaun Hill and Alex Smith under consideration. Hill spoke of his first preseason action:

“We were able to move the ball and we had a big conversion on third down. That last sack kind of hurt us. That was completely on me. The offensive line did a great job out there. So I’d like to have that play back and I feel like we could have gotten seven out of that.”

Smith was just happy to be back on the field after missing the entire 2008 season due to injury:

“Obviously, I was raring to go when I got out there. It’s been a long time for me, so I was pretty amped up.”

Denver will head to the Pacific Northwest for a game against the Seattle Seahawks next Saturday night. San Francisco, meanwhile, will host their local rivals the Oakland Raiders.

San Diego To Be Without ‘LT’ For Second Straight Week

September 28, 2010

Comments Off

LaDanian Tomlinson is still not fully recovered from a sprained right ankle, and as a result hell miss his second consecutive NFL regular season game this Sunday as the Chargers host the Miami Dolphins. Tomlinson was hurt in the San Diego Chargers season opening victory over the Oakland Raiders and didn’t play last week.

After playing in eight consecutive regular season games last year, the superstar running back has missed three of the Chargers last four games. Most significant was last January, when a groin injury kept LT out of the Chargers AFC playoff loss to the eventual Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tomlinson refused comment when asked about his injury:

“I don’t have a comment about it. It is what it is.”

Until his recent bouts with injury, Tomlinson had been one of the most durable running backs in the league. Prior to last season, the only start hed missed in his career was the season finale in 2004 when then-coach Marty Schottenheimer rested Tomlinson and other starters in advance of the NFL playoffs.

While Tomlinson himself was tight lipped, his coach Norv Turner spoke about his injury:

“It’s hard because you’d like to have all your guys. It’s crazy, because on Sept. 1, when people were asking me what I thought about camp, I said it was great that we were healthy and had all our guys, because that’s something we haven’t had in a while.

“I think we’re doing the right thing with L.T. Obviously he couldn’t play this week, you know, but he’s getting better and hopefully he’ll be able to go next week. if not, he’ll be ready to go when the bye’s over.”

The Chargers also have a half dozen players listed as questionable due to flu like symptoms. Turner spoke about their prognosis:

“I think we’re beyond the guys who had it. I obviously have a concern that they’re not too drained, but I think we have a couple days to get them back. My concern is what’s going to pop up tomorrow morning or Sunday morning because obviously it’s going through the building.”

Darren Sproles started in LTs place last week, and has performed well this season. Sproles, who also returns kickoffs and punts, had 524 all purpose yards in two games this season.

The Chargers are a -6 home favorite against the Miami Dolphins this Sunday, with the total set at 44. The first half line on the game is San Diego -3 with the total set at 21. San Diego will travel to the Steel City of Pittsburgh next Sunday to face the Superbowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, and then enjoy a much needed bye week.

Quickly Enhance Your Vertical Leap With Subconscious Mind Power

September 27, 2010

Comments Off

You can easily increase your vertical leap by up to fifty percent with proper application of your subconscious mind power. A higher vertical leap can translate into increased sports performance in virtually any sport, as it is a quick measure of flexibility, muscle strength, and overall fitness. You will know exactly what to do by the time you finish reading this article.

To start with, don’t be put off by the concept of your subconscious mind. A lot of people relate this with mysticism as well as new age sorts of things, but that is not very true. Your subconscious thoughts are just your own substantial, incredibly powerful computer that functions beyond your conscious understanding. It keeps your heart beating, your lungs inhaling and exhaling, and your hair growing.

You can even program your subconscious to simply attain just about any objective. And truth be told, attaining increased sports performance is one of the easiest targets to accomplish by appropriate programming of your subconscious mind. When programmed effectively, your subconscious mind will modify all other areas in your life, such as sleep, diet, and preference to exercise, to make your goal become a reality.

Studies have shown this to be real. Several university students showed that merely by imagining (which is a technique to program your subconscious) doing free throws repeatedly, they really enhanced their general percentages.

How can you make this happen? Easy. First get a perception of how high you’d like to leap. Turn it into a stretch, but not too much so it will be hard to believe. As an example, if you’re able to only leap eight inches or so, make your primary goal to jump 12, which will be a fifty percent increase. Get yourself a clear notion of what it really would look like to observe yourself jump 12 inches off the ground. Mark this particular elevation versus a wall, and prepare a visualization where you can genuinely notice yourself jumping this high. Develop the actual visualization from various angles.

Now you have got your miniature movie to play, you are going to require to create some phrases to go with it. Basic statements that describe your ability to leap that high. If you can, make believe a recognized mentor or role model is suggesting how high you can jump. Even if you’ve never met the person, as long as you have an idea of what their voice sounds like, this will work.

Whenever you mix your picture, or miniature movie, with a highly regarded role model’s voice, this will be very powerful. When you are very tranquil, and in a sleepy, drowsy frame of mind, similar to when you are about to fall asleep, play the movie, and play the voice, repeatedly. With enough regularity, you’ll be jumping higher than ever sooner than you think.

Readily and organically employ your miraculous subconscious mind power and learn powerful covert hypnosis.

We will discuss the type of board that works best for such a thing and also describe several popular tricks that are commonly seen.

Some people might not want to risk the type of injuries that actual surfing tricks could result in. This particular sport runs a much lower risk of such injuries because it is typically performed within the actual shore region of the beach. People who surf, are typically pulling tricks that take place within much deeper regions of the ocean that involve much larger waves.

People who are considering shopping around town for a board that will suite them well for the purpose of performing tricks are going to learn that these boards differ greatly in both their price as well as intention. There are some boards that are under a hundred dollars and others that are well over this range. The more expensive boards have actually been designed around the purpose of doing fancy tricks.

There is a very popular trick that is very common to see around most shore areas and it is called the three sixty. A person who is riding a board will begin to dip on of their hands into the wet sand that they are coasting across. When they do this, they typically start to pull full three hundred and sixty degree turns. Most people who witness the trick find it to be very impressive.

Another very commonly seen trick is typically referred to as the board drop. The most advanced forms of this trick very very similar to the skate boarding trick that is called the kick flip. A person leaps from their board while allowing it to flip or turn, from under their feet, only to land safely on it. When performed wrong, the boarder will usually either slip on fall.

By now, you should have a much better idea behind the concept of using a skimboard for impressive tricks. Keep in mind that the more expensive boards will suite you quite well for this purpose. Also remember how very important it is to practice as well as be safe.

Seattle Slew’s Legacy Of Horse Racing Greatness

September 25, 2010

Comments Off

Seattle Slew–the last living Triple Crown winner–died on May 7, 2002 at the age of 28. As one of only 11 Triple Crown winners in history, he is by default one of the greatest horses in the history of thoroughbred racing. Of those 11 legendary animals, Seattle Slew was the only one to complete the Triple Crown with an undefeated record, as well as the only one to have been purchased at a public auction. After retiring in’78, Slew became one of the most important and successful stud horses in the history of the sport. He sired 1,066 foals including 102 stakes race winners. Among this impressive group of offspring was the’84 Kentucky Derby winner, Swale. All told, Slew’s offspring have won an amazing $76 million dollars at the race track. Slew’s stud fee of $300,000 made him a very profitable horse even after his racing career was over. Slew wasn’t a particularly attractive horse, but he had the toughness of a championship boxer and the sort of intestinal fortitude and desire that can only be given by The Creator.

The Seattle Slew story began very modestly at a public auction in Lexington, Kentucky. The Keeneland Summer Yearling sale wasn’t supposed to be the marketplace of champions, and the idea that this particular horse would ever amount to anything other than a farmhand was downright laughable. Slew looked clumsy, due primarily to a right forefoot that splayed outward and resulting in a shuffling gait at a trot. He also wasn’t a majestic beast like his predecessor by a few years, Secretariat. Slew was borderline ugly. So ungainly a creature was he that he was given the less than inspiring nickname “Baby Huey” by the Keeneland staff. He was purchased by two couples (Karen and Mickey Taylor and Jim and Sally Hill) for $17,500. What wasn’t apparent at the yearling sale was the intangibles that make up a championship thoroughbred–poise under pressure, love of competition, toughness, heart and desire. The Taylor’s and Hill’s had stumbled onto an equine Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan who’s competitive fire quickly became apparent to the trainers that worked with him and the jockeys that rode him. His first race came at Belmont in’76, and the three races he entered–and won–as a 2 year old gave a hint of what was to come.

Slew quickly became a horse to watch as a three year old as he won three Derby prep races including the Wood Memorial. In the Derby, Slew got off to a terrible start as he stumbled out of the gate. He recovered from the miscue and essentially bulled his way through a pack of horses to lead at the 1/4 mile pole. Slew would win the Derby by a length and 3 quarters. He took another tough victory at the Preakness before clinching the Triple Crown with a 4 length victory in the Belmont Stakes.

Slew ran in a few races as a 4 year old but in the pre-Breeders’ Cup days there wasn’t as many opportunities for an older horse. He retired to stud in’78, where he sired champions such as the aforementioned Swale and’92 Belmont Champ AP Indy.

Slew may not have earned the appreciation he deserved in his prime, coming so closely on the heels of the charismatic’73 Triple Crown winner Secretariat–arguably the greatest thoroughbred race horse in history. The jockeys that rode him, however, understood fully what a special animal they were dealing with. Jockey Angel Cordero gave Seattle Slew this lofty praise: “If I had a chance to take any horse in the world, if someone said your life is depending on riding one horse to win, I would take (Slew). I rode 44,000 horses, but he was special, he was different. He was muscled, like a wrestler. He ran different than any other horse. It was like he came from another planet.”

After his death in 2002, Slew was buried at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, Kentucky under a statue in his image.

MMA Pioneer Helio Gracie Remembered

September 24, 2010

Comments Off

Gracie family patriarch and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu pioneer Helio Gracie died in early 2009 in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 95. Its impossible to overestimate his influence on martial arts, and particularly his pathbreaking role in what is now the sport of mixed martial arts. The Gracie family name will forever be synonymous with Brazilian sports, jiu-jitsu, MMA and the UFC–not only due to Helios own accomplishments but the legacy he created both by training others and through his family.

Helio Gracie began his training in mixed martial arts early, and by his teenage years was already teaching judo. While he had no problem mastering the theoretical aspects of judo, he found that many of its techniques were less effective for a practitioner with a smaller build. Along with his brother Carlos, Gracie began to work out his own fighting system by adapting many of judo’s techniques and making them more a product of leverage rather than brute strength. This led to the creation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), frequently called Gracie Jiu Jitsu in his honor.

Gracie also had a professional fighting career of his own, taking on champions from other fighting disciplines in an early version of modern MMA. These bouts were grueling, unregulated affairs with rules that were often made up as they went along and time limits that seem barbaric by todays standards. By his own recollection, he had 15 fights against the top fighters of his day. These included pro wrestlers, boxers and other martial arts specialists.

Gracie’s most famous opponent was against legendary Japanese judoka Masahiko Kimura. Gracie fought bravely in a losing cause, and ironically may have enhanced his reputation in defeat. He refused to submit to a reverse arm bar (the move that is now known as a ‘kimura’ in honor of its inventor), and the fight ended after his brother Carlos threw in the towel after Helio’s arm had been broken.

Gracie’s greatest impact, however, may have been through his progeny which is an important part of Brazilian sports and mixed martial arts even today. Royce Gracie is well known as the first UFC superstar, while sons Rickson Royler, Renzo have also achieved considerable fame in professional MMA. At the time of his death, Helio Gracie was a 6th Dan Judo black belt and the only living 10th degree master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Gracie died at age 95, after suffering stomach problems though the cause of his death was officially listed as ‘natural causes’. His last words are classic and highly fitting for a man who gave so much to martial arts and fighting sports:

“I created a flag from the sports dignity. I oversee the name of my family with affection and nerves of blood.

New Products For Bowhunting – Getting It Done On The Field

September 22, 2010

Comments Off

In the last few years, bowhunting has been given a boost with new products for bowhunting. These make it a cinch even for beginners to hit their target with little practice and the minimum of frustration.

People who like to hunt with a bow for the pure pleasure of it should absolutely get themselves mechanical bowstring releases. They make it possible even for non-athletes to shoot their arrow straight without having to develop their own style for doing that. Releasing the arrow manually will need you to study your own way of doing that.

Most people, even the most highly expert ones cannot avoid pulling the bowstring to the side a bit when they manually release it. The trick becomes to aim not straight at the target, but for somewhere slightly off to make allowance for the slight deflection of manually releasing the string. Though that can be mastered with practice, it may take quite a bit of that.

Mechanical releases make sure that the string is released in precisely the direction of the target. There are two kind of mechanical releases. One is attached to the wrist while the other is held by hand. One type is really just as good as the other and your decision as to which to buy will depend on where you are most comfortable using the release. It might be a good idea to get one of each kind. It is good to be versatile.

Vanes are the ‘feathers’ at the back end of the arrow shaft. Those devices are meant to keep the arrow on its course. They work well in still air but sometimes, large vanes will make the arrow go off target if there is some wind. In conditions of strong wind, using large vanes is definitely out of the question.

The new vanes are more compact to minimize the effect of the wind. However their shape is maximized for steering ability. Naturally the only way to steer the arrow is straight ahead. In other words, the newer vanes make sure that your arrow stays on the right path and are shaped so as to make the impact of wind minimal,

The design of the new vanes has also been improved to provide the least resistance to the flight of the shaft and increasing the speed of the arrow.

The latest bows have much improve accessories. From bowsights to peep sights, the newest ones are more accurate and have a better feel. The result is that you exert less effort to shoot the arrow straight

Arrow rests are devices to keep the arrow in its proper position before shooting it. Bow sights are devices mounted on the bow for focusing on the target. The kisser buttons and the peep sights serve the same purpose. However, they are attached to the string of the bow.

The most difficult thing in bow hunting is the nerve strain and the strain on your arms and eyes while keeping the string taught and adjusting your aim. By facilitating the process of taking a good aim, you will lessen the strain on yourself. Additionally, the latest bowhunting gear can keep your arrow on target more effectively.

If you have the best of modern bowhunting equipment, you get more satisfaction from the sport.

The Modern Broadheads For Bowhunting

September 21, 2010

Comments Off

Originally, braodheads were weapons for battle. As the name suggests, they were flat and had a broad base which tapered into a sharp and pointed tip. Today’s broadheads for bowhunting have considerably improved since then.

Although there are many differing shapes in which broadheads were made into, the basic shape was triangular, the way we see children draw tips of arrows. Besides the basic triangle, some broadheads were shaped like diamonds. The base line of the triangle was broken into two sides which completed the diamond shape.

Often, additional teeth or blades would be encountered along the long sides. Sometimes the blades would resemble hooks which could be found either on the long sides of the triangle or at the base line on either side. The hooks resembled inverted fins. The extra teeth and hooks were meant to lacerate the wound when a person attempted to pull the arrow out.

Today, broadheads are still popularly used but not as war weapons. Hunters who use bow and arrow on their prey prefer to used broadhead arrows more than any other type. This is because, given a good aim, these arrows can end the life of animals instantly. Should the animal survive the shot, he is likely to leave behind a trail of blood which can be easily detected and followed.

Additionally, todays broadheads for bowhunting are made of better materials giving them the ability, if aimed correctly, to kill an animal on the spot mercifully rather than allow it to run away in pain. Most old broadheads were fixed on the shaft.

The blades we see in modern broadheads are hollow on the inside.and consist only of the outer edge of the triangles. This makes them much lighter to shoot. There are still broadheads that have teeth on their edges. Other models still feature hook like appendages that are curved and resemble the tips of harpoons.

Additionally, the blades are usually just the edges of the triangular shape with the insides hollow. This contributes to the lightness of the broadhead. As in the middle ages, they may have smaller teeth built into them along their outer edges or they may have hooks at the corners of their base, resembling harpoons.

The reason for that is that those which are fixed in shape may sometimes be deviated from their target by strong gusts of wind. They sometimes miss hitting the target in the right position or fail to make contact altogether.

Basing the concept on that of replaceable shaving blades, manufacturers have invented replaceable blades for broadheads. It becomes possible to have a brand new broadhead without having to buy an entire new unit.
